Urban Ecological Systems (UES) has developed a solution to one of the most pressing global challenges; feeding the burgeoning urban populations of the 21st Century - sustainably, securely and profitably.

UES has created a sustainable state-of-the-art food production system that takes the waste stream from aquaculture and safely processes it to create an allowable input to organic food production. A UES Farm allows profitable, environmentally sustainable food production securely located close to urban areas. UES Farms can also operate in niches not previously viable such as environmentally sensitive locations and remote communities where growing resources are limited and fresh vegetables and high quality fish protein are expensive.

UES’ combined aquaculture-horticulture system grows a range of fresh vegetables and other horticultural crops in a climate-controlled greenhouse. Fish in tanks are located in the greenhouse basement and supplies nutrients to plants on the upper level of the greenhouse. The plants strip the nutrients from the aquaculture effluent so that clean water can be returned to the fish tanks. This closed loop creates a virtually weather- independent and drought-proof farm that achieves very high production per square metre of land

ImageThe compact footprint, combined with a non-toxic organic production system and the fact that no effluents are discharged, allows farm units to be located close to urban markets.

Food that is produced and consumed locally greatly reduces the CO2 emissions imbedded in huge distribution and cold chain networks and provides local fresh food security for an ever-increasing numbers of urban dwellers.

UES Farms now make it possible to provide organic food and fresh fish for a competitive price into a range of rapidly expanding niche markets - benefiting the environment, the farmer and the consumer.

This opens up exciting new business opportunities for supermarkets, fresh-produce wholesalers, food franchisers, food processors and value adders, eco-resorts, and other businesses wanting to expand into the rapidly-growing certified-organic niche.
